Jewelry is more than just adornment, it is an intimate expression of love, heritage, and identity. It tells a story, evokes emotions, and becomes a precious symbol of personal meaning. ZOME, the visionary jewelry brand founded by Meghna Biswas, embodies this philosophy by seamlessly blending fine craftsmanship, sustainability, and artistic innovation in the heart of the United Arab Emirates.

– Meghna Biswas –
Before the brilliance of gemstones captured her heart, Meghna Biswas was already a master of design. With more than 15 years of experience Interior designing luxury architectural landmarks in the UK and the Middle East—including The Fairmont Hotel – Palm Jumeirah, Kingdom of Sheba – Palm Jumeirah, The Four Seasons – Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World – Abu Dhabi, Six Senses Southern Dunes – Red Sea and Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab – Dubai, Meghna has brought her artistic flair to the world of fine jewelry. Drawing from her Indian heritage and architectural expertise, she transforms raw gemstones into exquisite, wearable masterpieces.

In our interview Meghna explains what originally led her from Interior design & architecture to jewelry design: “My love for beauty, design, and storytelling has always shaped my creative pursuits. As an interior designer specializing in luxury hotels, I was drawn to the art of creating spaces that evoke emotion, balance, and harmony. Over time, I realized that the same principles apply to fine jewelry—jewelry is a deeply personal space, like wearable art, crafted to evoke sentiment and connection. The transition from architecture to jewelry felt natural because both disciplines revolve around proportions, textures, and a meticulous attention to detail. ZOME is a reflection of my artistic sensibility, where I reinterpret architectural elements, ancient craftsmanship, and sculptural aesthetics into modern, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. The basis for our designs stems from our passion for reinterpreting historical heritage and vintage forms into contemporary pieces, ensuring they remain timeless yet relevant.

Meghna sees jewelry as an extension of the self, where each color tells a story and each gemstone carries a unique energy.

The use of unconventional gemstones such as spinels and tourmalines is indicative of her art, and shows her ability to feel the rhythm of colors.
Meghna continues, “I have an immense love for colored gemstones. There’s something magical about the palette of colors nature offers – often in stones that people don’t see every day. That’s why I often work with unique gems like spinels and tourmalines in my designs. Each of these stones is a marvel of nature. Tourmalines, for instance – they’re actually my favorite gemstone to work with. Their range of colors is astonishing, from vibrant pinks and greens to deep blues. Each tourmaline has its own personality, which means every piece I create with them feels one-of-a-kind. Spinels, as well, come in incredible hues and possess a brilliance that can rival more famous stones. By featuring these gems, I get to paint with a broader brush and craft jewelry that really stands out with color and character.
That said, I know not everyone is familiar with these gemstones, so education becomes key. I love sharing the story of a stone with clients – explaining where it comes from, how rare it might be, and what makes it special. Many of these so-called “semi-precious” gems are actually quite rare and valuable in their finest forms. Educating customers about these unconventional gemstones is something I’m passionate about. When people learn, for example, that a spinel was long mistaken for a ruby in crown jewels, or that a vivid tourmaline is a natural wonder, their eyes light up. It’s rewarding to see clients appreciate the gemstone’s beauty even more once they know the lore and rarity behind it. I feel like I’m not just designing jewelry, but also shining a light on nature’s hidden treasures, helping others marvel at them as I do.”

Inspired by nature, culture, and art, she uses the timeless beauty of techniques such as enameling and filigree to create unique designs.
“These techniques, often forgotten in contemporary design, add a touch of heritage and sophistication to Zome’s pieces, making each creation a wearable piece of art that bridges the gap between past and present”, she explains.

The result? Pieces of jewelry that not only impress with their beauty but also with their depth and meaning.

Ethical Luxury: sustainability & craftsmanship
At ZOME every piece is meticulously crafted with sustainability and ethical sourcing at its core. Meghna works with skilled artisans and fair-trade workshops to ensure that ZOME’s creations honor both craftsmanship and consciousness. By using responsibly sourced gemstones and high-quality metals such as 18k gold, the brand is committed to ethical principles.

“Sustainability and ethical sourcing are central to ZOME. We are passionate about establishing mine-to-market relationships, ensuring that our gemstones are not only of the highest quality but also sourced through fair and responsible practices. We believe that luxury should be conscientious our jewelry carries the stories of the artisans, miners, and designers who bring it to life,” says Biswas. “Empowering women is another core value at ZOME. As a woman-led brand, I want to create jewelry that speaks to strong, independent women who appreciate craftsmanship and artistry. Each piece is designed to be a statement, an emblem of self-confidence, self-expression, and individuality. “

The storytelling element
“For me, every design begins with a story or an inspiration. This can be a memory, a feeling, or a scene from nature or culture that has moved me. I often say that even gemstones have their own stories – natural wonders shaped over millions of years – and when I design, I interweave my story with that of the stone. Each piece thus becomes very personal. In fact, many of my creations have specific stories behind them. For example, one of the very first rings I designed was inspired by a spring garden in full bloom – I used an array of multicolored sapphires and diamonds to capture the vibrancy and freshness of that scene. Every time I look at that ring, it reminds me of that joyful memory of spring. Another piece I loved designing is a pair of earrings with deep blue tanzanites framed by green peridots; the idea was to evoke the mystery of a twilight sky with emerging stars, and that story really comes through in the colors and composition.
Ultimately, my goal is that each ZOME piece resonates with the wearer’s own story as well. I design jewelry not just as adornment, but as an extension of someone’s personality and experiences. When someone wears ZOME, I want them to feel a connection, as if the piece was made for them, or speaks to something in their life. In a way, ZOME is more than a brand; it’s a bridge for storytelling and creating meaningful connections through jewelry. When I see someone wearing a piece of jewelry and know that it has meaning to them, is incredibly fulfilling. It means I’ve created not onlyt a beautiful object, but a personal story in art form.”
“Heritage craftsmanship is something that is very close to my heart, both as an artist and as someone proud of a rich cultural background. I grew up in India surrounded by jewelry that featured techniques such as intricate filigree work and vibrant enamel (meenakari), and I was always in awe of the skill and patience that went into these pieces. When I founded ZOME, I consciously wanted to incorporate some of these time-honored techniques into fresh, modern designs,” explains Biswas.

At the end of the interview, I asked Meghna what’s next: “The future of ZOME is to expand our global presence and captivate clients worldwide with our unique, one-of-a-kind creations. We are keen to explore innovative materials, such as titanium, to push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship. Our aim is to seamlessly blend cutting-edge techniques with traditional artistry, to ensure our designs remain at the forefront of jewelry innovation. Moreover, we are committed to strengthening our direct relationships with gemstone suppliers and promotimg ethical and sustainable practices in the industry. We want to continue to enhance our storytelling, craftsmanship, and educational efforts, so that each ZOME piece is admired not only for its beauty but also for the thoughtfulness and integrity behind it.”
