On September 5th, 2024, the prestigious Hotel Cipriani in Venice became the stage for a truly memorable event organized by the Better World Fund during the 81st Venice Film Festival. The event, themed around women’s empowerment and sustainable development, gathered Hollywood stars, philanthropists, and global leaders to celebrate the power of cinema and its potential to inspire societal change.
Hosted by Manuel Collas de la Roche, Chairman and Founder of Better World Fund, and co-chaired by Ronit Raphael, Founder and CEO of L.RAPHAEL Genève, the day began with a Special Masterclass featuring none other than Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon and the iconic actor, director, and producer Kevin Costner.
These two influential figures took part in a discussion centred on women’s empowerment in cinema and society, offering insights into their personal journeys and women’s roles in the film industry. Sarandon and Costner, known for their activism and humanitarian efforts, engaged in candid discussions about the evolving role of women in the world of film and beyond.
During the Masterclass, Costner expressed his admiration for the women of the West, highlighting women’s often-overlooked struggles and contributions throughout history. “Women of the West worked themselves to death,” Costner remarked, emphasizing how their efforts have been historically overshadowed. He also credited Sarandon, a close friend, as one of his inspirations: “This is a really brave woman, a brave actress, a friend. Someone in our business that stands for a lot and pays a price for it.”
Susan Sarandon, in turn, shared heartfelt reflections on motherhood and the resilience of women across different walks of life. She spoke about women’s ability to be problem solvers, highlighting their role as the “glue” that holds families and communities together. Sarandon praised ordinary women who undertake extraordinary tasks, particularly mothers, whose strength she deeply admires.
The Masterclass, moderated by Guila Clara Kessous, a UNESCO Artist for Peace and social entrepreneur, offered profound discussions on the impact of women in cinema and society. Kessous, an expert in trauma healing through role-play techniques, brought additional depth to the conversation, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking session.
In addition to the star-studded Masterclass, the event featured panels on diplomacy, neuroscience, and sustainable fashion, moderated by notable figures such as Enzo di Taranto, former Campaign Manager for the United Nations Secretary-General. Among the prominent speakers were Jacqueline Isaac (International Lawyer), Claire Stride (Neuroscience Specialist), Alina Kuderska (CEO of Sparkies), Nataliya Resh (Philanthropist), and several esteemed personalities from the world of cinema, including Valentina Castellani-Quinn, Ilaria Freccia, Silvia Bizio, Alessandra Speciale, and Deborah Zara Kobylt.
The evening it culminated in a glamorous gala dinner held in the luxurious surroundings of the Hotel Cipriani. The Gala, attended by a distinguished guest list, was marked by a stunning performance by opera singer Anna Sanachina, an awards ceremony, and a charity auction benefiting the Donà dalle Rose Foundation. This Venetian foundation, known for its support of cultural and philanthropic initiatives, received generous donations throughout the evening.
For Manuel Collas de la Roche, the evening celebrated cinema and the shared human experience. Inspired by the teachings of Indian humanitarian Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi), Collas de la Roche emphasized the importance of cinema for spreading messages of hope and compassion.
Since its inception in 2016, the Better World Fund has dedicated itself to raising awareness about critical global issues, and this year’s event in Venice was no exception. Collas de la Roche reflected, “As we do every year, we do our utmost to ensure that this evening, which is all about the heart, is unforgettable for our guests.”
